Verschaffeltia splendida – Stilt Palm (Seychelles Palm)
A rare and visually distinctive palm, Verschaffeltia splendida is native to the tropical forests of the Seychelles and is the sole species in its genus. This palm is easily recognized by its aerial, stilt-like roots, which elevate the trunk above ground level—a feature present even in young specimens. It is naturally restricted to just three islands, where it thrives in humid, mountainous environments.
Early in its development, the trunk bears protective spines that gradually disappear with age. Its broad, pinnate leaves emerge in a vibrant orange hue before turning green, and older leaves eventually tear naturally and leave decorative scars as they shed. The palm produces elegant flowering stalks bearing small blooms, followed by greenish-brown to reddish-brown fruits.
Cultivation Notes:
In non-tropical regions, this palm can be successfully grown in containers and makes an attractive ornamental feature. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with well-draining soil and consistent moisture. Although it enjoys outdoor conditions in summer, it must be protected from cold temperatures during winter months.
Sowing Instructions:
Plant germinated seeds directly in a moist, well-drained growing medium. Keep the soil slightly moist at all times and place the container in a bright, sunny location for optimal growth.
