Long pepper is a plant. The fruit and root of the plant are used to make medicine.  Long pepper is commonly used in combination with other herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and other types of traditional medicine.

Long pepper is used for gastrointestinal problems, lung problems, arthritis, problems during menstruation, and many other conditions, but there is no scientific evidence to support these uses.

Long pepper is also used to enhance how well the body absorbs other drugs.

Pepper long is the dried fruit of Piper longum which is a slender, aromatic plant with creeping jointed stems and perennial woody roots. The leaves are 5-9 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, ovate, cordate with broad rounded lobes at the base. Female spikes are cylindrical, male spikes are larger and slender. Female spikes are 1.3-2.5 cm long, 4.5 mm diameter, fruits ovoid, yellowish orange, minute, drupe and are sunk in the fleshy spike. The spike are red when ripe.
 

How does it work ?
Long pepper contains certain chemicals. These chemicals may be able to fight certain parasites that can infect people. They might also help to reduce inflammation (swelling) and kill cancer cells. One of these chemicals called piperine also seems to change the lining of the intestines. This change allows some drugs and other substances taken by mouth to be better absorbed by the body.
